Ouanalao Residences & Resort

Luxurious Beach Homes on Hutchinson Island, Florida

Hello. Joel Greene here from Condo Hotel Center.

If you come to Florida for a visit, you’re likely to go out for seafood at some point. As you’d expect, our restaurants offer an amazing variety of fresh fish and delicacies like oysters. But what you may not know is that if you eat oysters, your empty shells likely won’t be thrown in the trash.

The Florida Oceanographic Oyster Restoration program collects oyster shells from local restaurants and uses them to restore oyster habitats in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon. The lagoon is home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals, including 36 rare and endangered species.

Enjoy some Florida oysters but don’t throw away the empty shells.

Oysters are critical to Florida’s ecosystems. They filter nutrients for marine life and provide a habitat for fish and marine invertebrates. They also break up wave energy that would otherwise contribute to shoreline erosion.

Oysters are critical to Florida’s ecosystems. Recycling their shells helps restore oyster reefs.

Available shell is often the most limiting factor in restoring oyster reefs, and so placing shells recycled from restaurants on the lagoon floor jump-starts the process. Baby oysters spat-glue themselves to it to create new reef.

You can learn a lot more about Florida’s coastal ecosystems at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, a 57-acre marine life nature center located on Hutchinson Island, approximately 2.5 hours from Miami. Hutchinson Island is also the location of today’s featured property. Read on for details.

Beautiful Hutchinson Island

Located on the east coast of Florida, Hutchinson Island is a long, thin barrier island that stretches from Fort Pierce to Stuart. It has 23 miles of pristine beaches as well as many nature preserves and parks.

It’s a chosen nesting destination for some of the ocean’s most endangered sea turtles. You can also enjoy other Florida wildlife including numerous bird species, whales and manatees.

Hutchinson Island is about 2.5 hours from Miami.

Ouanalao has a convenient location on Hutchinson Island. It offers easy access to golf, deep-sea fishing, shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Vero Beach and Port St. Lucie are less than an hour away with their sophisticated cultural scene. And sports enthusiasts can enjoy watching the New York Mets play their spring training home games just minutes from Ouanalao.

Aw Shucks, They’d Welcome the Help

Remember the oyster reefs I mentioned at the beginning? It’s no small project. To date, the Florida Oceanographic Society has restored 60,000 square feet of Florida reefs, which was made possible with the help of over 2,400 volunteers and over 6,000 volunteer hours. If you want to pitch in, they’re sure to welcome the help.

Volunteers pitch in to restore oyster reefs in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon.

Again, feel free to request our Ouanalao Residences & Resort. And if Hutchinson Island isn’t your preferred location, just let me know what is, and I’ll provide you with other destination vacation home options. The world is your…
