Casamar Beach

Oceanfront Condo Tower in Pompano Beach, Florida

Hello. Joel Greene here from Condo Hotel Center.

Ever been to Pompano Beach? It’s a Florida city just north of Fort Lauderdale known for its beautiful beaches, offshore coral reef, fishing and dive sites. Here’s a quick history lesson.

Although Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821, few inhabitants lived in the area now known as Pompano Beach at the time. It was isolated and mainly impenetrable. Until the railroad came to town.

In 1896 George Butler and Frank Sheen became the first documented residents. The two men were railroad employees and part of the great Florida expansion triggered by Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway.

That railroad linked the entire east coast of Florida, from Jacksonville to Key West, and helped establish tourism and agriculture as Florida’s major industries. In fact, farmers from all over South Florida brought their produce to Pompano Beach to load onto trains headed for the Northeast United States.

Legend has it that Sheen, who was surveying the area, noted in his records the name of a delicious fish he had eaten, a pompano. Thus a community got its name and, with the arrival of the first train later that year, a town was born.

Throughout much of its modern history Pompano Beach was regarded as a sleepy beach town with tranquil waterways and miles of golden sand. But in recent years, millions of dollars have been invested to develop a beachside streetscape, a fishing pier with shops and restaurants, a Cultural Arts Center, and a shipwreck park (more on that last one later).

I’m telling you all this because today’s featured property is an oceanfront condo in Pompano Beach. Read on for details.

Shipwreck Park

When I was researching Pompano Beach, I learned that one of its main attractions is Shipwreck Park. I expected it to be a mini-golf course or maybe a kids’ playground. It’s actually something much more interesting.

Shipwreck Park is a world-class wreck diving and ecotourism site less than two miles off the coast of Pompano Beach. As an underwater artificial reef system, it provides new habitats (sunken ships) for marine life while taking pressure off the natural reefs nearby.

Shipwreck Park currently has 17 sunken wrecks plus a variety of underwater art sculptures (think mermaids and sea horses), all of which divers can explore at their leisure – or until their air runs out.
