I grew up in the Miami area. As far back as I can remember, there was talk about the city needing a venue for the performing arts. Sure they used to film the Honeymooners with Jackie Gleason here, but that was about as classy as this city got.

While I can’t claim to be someone who chooses to go to the opera, (I’m more of a standup comedy kind of guy) I’d have to agree that the city was lacking in culture.

In 2006, after a quarter century of planning, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade Country finally opened in downtown Miami. A mammoth center, it soon served as the foundation for some of South Florida’s biggest arts groups – Florida Concert Association, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet, Miami Symphony Orchestra, and New World Symphony.

Since its opening, the Arsht Center has become a magnet for music, dance, theater and performing arts companies from around the world. And it’s not only the largest performing arts center in Florida; it’s also one of the largest in the entire U.S.

The reason I’m talking about the Arsht Center today is because today’s featured property is being built just steps from it. So if you’re interested in the arts or even if you just like the idea of being close to somewhere that classy stuff happens, you’ll want to read on for details.

Auberge Residences and Spa Miami living at its best.  The 60-story, 380+ unit tower is the first phase of a three-tower project that will eventually have 1,430 units and 13,280 square feet of retail space.

In addition to the 290 condos, there will be 90 designer suites.  The designer suites, located on floors 3-11, are likely to be one-bedroom, condo-hotel units, ranging from 560-890 sq. ft. The suites will come fully finished and furnished, with starting prices of $750-$850 sq. ft. and they will be eligible for participation in the Auberge hotel rental program.  The developer is only taking reservations now for these 90 units.

A limited collection of sky penthouses and duplex penthouse residences will make up the top eight floors.

The Development Team

Auberge Miami has an impressive team working on the project. The developer is The Related Group, which has a portfolio of projects worth in excess of $15 billion, many of them prestigious properties located in South Florida.

The architect is the internationally renowned Miami firm Arquitectonica, founded in 1977. They designed the 60-story Auberge tower to have a uniquely angled façade, ensuring views of Biscayne Bay from the living room and master bedroom of most residences.

Dramatic double height lobby and other interiors feature the work of celebrated Italian designer Piero Lissoni, with outdoor spaces by award-winning Swiss landscape architect Enzo Enea.

A Prime Location

As I mentioned at the beginning, Auberge Miami will boast a premium downtown location steps from cultural and social landmarks such as the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Ziff Opera House, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), American Airlines Arena (home of the Miami Heat), and the Patricia & Philip Frost Museum of Science.

Prices Start at $345,000

The pricing on Auberge condos is surprisingly affordable. And there’s a good reason why. This launch comes at a time when new condo purchases in Miami have slowed a bit as foreign buyers have cut back on buying because of the strengthening U.S. dollar. For Americans, the lower prices provide an opportunity.

The average price per square foot in Auberge Miami is $575. That’s less than half of the price for new units in the nearby 1000 Museum condo.  And many projects in downtown Miami are selling for over $700 per square foot.

Reminiscing About Old Miami

When I was a kid, I spent my summers at sleepaway camp in North Carolina. About a week before camp started, parents would receive a packing list for their kids. My dad, a single parent, would take the list and me to downtown Miami where there was a Sears Roebuck & Company store.

Dad would hand off the list to the first sales person he found, point to me and say, “Get this kid everything on the list.”

That Sears Roebuck store just happens to have been located on the very site of the Arsht Center I told you about at the beginning of this write-up.  It was Miami’s first Art Deco-style building. Constructed in 1929, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

The Sears store closed in 1983 and by 2001 the store space had been demolished.  The only surviving part of the original structure was a seven-story octagonal tower that was the building’s notorious entrance.

When it came time to build the Arsht Center, developers decided to preserve the historic tower and incorporate it into the new performing arts center.

So, if you ever go to a performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center, you can impress your friends with your knowledge about the site’s history.
